What’s in a Licence
Guide to Illustration Licensing with Anna Simmons
A licence defines the specific rights and permissions granted to you.
Rights outline what you're allowed to do with the illustration, such as how prominently it appears and whether the use is exclusive. Permissions set boundaries around those rights - like where and for how long they apply. These elements are agreed upon during the commissioning process and together form the licensing terms. The licence records these terms and becomes part of the final contract.
The diagram below shows how each of these components fits into the licence. Following the diagram is a glossary that defines each right and permission in more detail.
Rights
-
The media or product setting of the illustration and the size and context of display.
-
The number of restrictions on future licensing of the illustration that the client wishes to impose.
Permissions
-
The geographical areas where the illustration may be shared.
-
The period of time for which the illustration may be used.
Knowing these terms helps us both stay on the same page about your artwork needs, making our creative collaboration smooth and clear.
