Ohio Amish Country Map Illustration

If you'd asked me before I embarked on this project, Can tourists actually visit where the Amish live? my answer would have been a resounding “NO!”. (Honestly, I thought the community was so private that you could only experience how they live in books or documentaries).

It's a common misunderstanding… and that's precisely why this community decided to send an 'Outsiders Welcome!' message to potential visitors through the pages of Country Magazine.

Shifting Perceptions with a Splash of Colour

The goal of the project was to spark excitement and curiosity about an overlooked destination. We wanted to improve understanding of local customs, prime potential tourists, and put them at ease about their visit. And ultimately, to boost tourism, uplifting the community’s economy by increasing sales for hidden gem businesses. Imagine turning a no-go zone into a must-see destination—how do you do that if not through a myth-busting illustration?

The Power of Visual Storytelling

With so much content to cover, it was important to avoid textual overload and my lettering and illustration approach proved the perfect workaround. That's where my lettering and illustration approach came in handy. First, by grabbing attention through colorful visuals that tell stories instantly. And second, by organising content into an easy to navigate, information hierarchy. Think mix-and-match numbers that look fun but also direct the audience to further reading… as easy as 1-2-3!

The Journey of Crafting the Map

Creating this map was like piecing together a vibrant, living puzzle. Each element had to reflect the warmth and authenticity of the community and landscape. I pictured rolling hills, red barns, horse-drawn buggies, people in old-fashioned dress —all brought to life with my signature vintage textures and eclectic hand lettering. Resulting in an eye-catching illustration that inspires warmth and trust, emotionally connecting with audiences.

From Uncertainty to Enthusiasm

This project was a fantastic example of targeting ideal audiences through illustration. We attracted curious readers who cherish beautifully crafted content and are more likely to be open to education on cultural nuances and sensitivities. Opening the door of an unspoiled destination to the ideal audience? That’s a win-win for both client and customer!
