Illustrated Alaska Destination Guide Map

The brief for this project was part travel information design and part keepsake illustration. The client, Norwegian Cruise Line, wanted their passengers to experience the joy of holding a piece of art and rather than a text-heavy schedule and so opted for visual travel storytelling. The result was this Cruise Ship itinerary map, which doubled as a souvenir poster.

From Map Making to Memory Making!

On the practical side, a visual destination guide makes for effective travel communication. Guests can see at a glance where they are headed and what's on offer. With extra layers of adventure and hidden gems of information for those curious enough to explore.

And going that extra mile to create brand-aligned travel visuals, is a great way for the cruise line to show that they care about guests and their enjoyment. Setting the scene for an ease-filled experience before even setting sail.

Balancing Fun and Function

One of the key aspects of this project was ensuring the map was as colourful and fun as the journey itself! My drawing approach was to keep the details accurate enough to educate (especially for the Wildlife Legend) while maintaining a style that was energetic and free. With my lettering style also striking the balance between the fun and functional outcome desired by the client.

My geeky love for research also helped me along - believe me, no two Glaciers are the same! I took care to convey the uniqueness of each and every destination.

The Versatility of Digital Collage

My digital collage approach allowed me to combine textures, forms, and colours to depict the abstract beauty of natural wonders, from the Northern Lights to snowy peaks and icy glaciers. The same approach playfully adapting to the contrasting man-made scenes and cultural symbols which were integrated throughout.
